What was your greatest achievement or fondest memories of your Macquarie studies?
Studying full time, working and running a business of 14 employees at the same time was most memorable.

What do you consider are your most significant achievements away from Macquarie?
The most significant achievement is what I'm doing today. I've designed and developed an app for small businesses - Bookipi Invoice Generator App. It's actively used in 179+ countries and businesses are using the app to send over $80 million in invoices each month.

What advice would you give to someone studying your degree today?
Don't limit yourself to what you could achieve. If there is a problem in any area you face, solve it and share it with the world.

Master of Development Studies and Cultural Change - 2010

After my graduation from Macquarie University in 2010 with a Masters of Development Studies and Culture Change, I was nominated Australian Youth Ambassador for Development with the United Nations World Food Programme in Bangladesh. I spent two years in Dhaka working on food security and nutrition programmes, and on promoting gender mainstreaming. After this experience, my career in international development took off, and today I am a UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund) staff, working in Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation and currently based in Mali, West Africa. Before that, I spent nearly 4 years between West Africa and the Middle East, working on the Syria refugee crisis.

Since I was a child, I always knew that I wanted to work in international development, and in a position where I could make a difference. I remember that before enrolling in my Masters degree, I chose Macquarie University because the compulsory courses offered were from both Anthropology and Human Geography departments, and the electives were from a wide range of areas. And I thought: Development Studies is broad, I need to have knowledge and skills that cover international studies, environmental studies, sociology, cross cultural communication: Macquarie will give me the right tools for all these!

Studying the MA of Development Studies and Culture Change with likeminded people really solidified my passion to work in an area where I can have a real positive impact in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities and the lives of others. The experience from my time at Macquarie University has been invaluable. I have been able to successfully gain employment as a result of my studies and have been able to draw upon skills and knowledge from the course throughout my career. Among fellow students and my professors, I met brilliant people with brilliant ideas, and felt equipped to tackle problems and think about issues in the world.

I would encourage anyone studying at Macquarie University to look into working in the Indigenous field. There are currently surprisingly few qualified development professionals currently working in remote Indigenous Australia, and through the MA of Development Studies and Culture Change degree there is great potential to learn and make positive change with the first peoples of our country.

Bachelor of Commerce with Bachelor of Law - 2002
My fondest memories were definitely the stand out social life that Macquarie had to offer. Hanging out in the ‘Blue Room’ and around the fountain in between classes was an enjoyable way to pass the time. The grounds of Macquarie Uni were amazing. Definitely an environment which was conducive to relaxed learning.
After graduating with a double degree in commerce and law, I was eager to put my skills to use and gain some legal experience. I earned the chance to commence my practical legal training with the College of Law, which afforded me the opportunity to travel to places such as China for work – and at the same time, gain some valuable real-life experience. Following that, I was admitted as a solicitor and secured employment with Law Partners in 2008, and by 2014, I was promoted to a Principal of a Law Partners firm which can be found here: https://lawpartners.com.au. I have now notched up 10 years with Law Partners and I currently manage my professional life with being a wife and proud mother to two boys.

I have my second picture book due for release at the end of August. Called 'The Scared Book' it's illustrated by Kim Siew and published by Lothian.

Doctor of Philosophy - 1998
My PhD (conferred Macquarie 1998, title Pay TV in Australia) increased my awareness of the increasingly international and borderless nature of communication. I began looking for projects in need of such connections, and settled on Cambodia, which is one of the countries in the world most contaminated with landmines and UXO. I later volunteered my services to this country and produced Youtube videos to help raise awareness and funding. In this process, universities in Cambodia also saw the potential of these videos and I am now the Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Cambodia, helping to raise the standards and profile of tertiary studies. So my PhD from Macquarie opened up new vistas of communication and opportunities in the developing world. Macquarie was the genesis of this connection.

In a previous life I was a primary / elementary school teacher (including the Zoomobile - a classroom based at Taronga Zoo in Sydney); but now I am full-time children's author. The BEST job in the world! Graduating with a Master of Arts in Children's Literature you would think that I had something to do with kids books and you would be right. But not as a bookseller - I had already done that. And not as a children's author - I had already written a bundle of kids books. The MA has enabled me to lecture in tertiary institutions overseas. And what have I been lecturing about - Kids books of course. My books have even been on a previous Prime Minister's office book shelf! My name is Stephen Collins and I was awarded an MBA out of MGSM in1993. Now a dual US citizen, and living in the US since 2009, we invented a non-drug, non-invasive pain-relief device in Perth, WA that was commercialized in the US in April 2016. Offering physicians an alternative to prescribing opioid pain-killers, and offering hope to those suffering from chronic pain, we have embarked upon a lofty goal of changing the way that health care is dispensed in the US (and globally). Bachelor of Arts - 2013
I am a student who graduated from Macquarie University in the class of 2012. I completed a university degree in Development Studies and am currently working full time as an academic English teacher for international students. As a student at Macquarie University I had experience working with PACE international in development programs in both Peru and the Philippines- working as a volunteer in small community based organisations. Now that I am working full time it is hard to set aside the time to participate in such volunteer programs however I still like to take upon any challenge I can to help the global community and make a difference. This year I have taken upon the challenge of trekking the Kokoda track to raise money for Amnesty international, and I am also getting involved in a volunteer program for teaching English to refugees in Sydney. Macquarie University really encourages students to engage with the local and international communities around them. The PACE programs are a great way to get involved and I would definitely encourage other students to do so!

Doctor of Philosophy - 2016
Macquarie has been a great experience for me. I feel so privileged to have studied there for finishing my PhD degree in Linguistics. Studying there has been such an enriching experience for me with the kind of research support that I had from my supervisors and other friends with whom I have had such enriching discussions. A special shout out to Macquarie for making the whole experience so rich and providing me with a strong platform for becoming an independent researcher. I hope I could give back to the community with the help of my research.

Master of Business Administration - 1999
I was studying in Macquarie University at MGSM in 1998-99 for my Master’s degree in Business Administration. I thoroughly enjoyed being a student again at Macquarie, 24 years after I did my Post graduation in India. The walks in the green expanse and heated debates over coffee on as diverse subjects as India’s nuclear test in May 1998-I was then an officer in Ministry of Defence, Government of India, wine making in Australia or existentialism- inspired by lectures of Dr Robert Spillane were the spice of life! Cut my teeth in Economics with Dr Chris Hall and made a ton of friends. Being in Government, all that we learnt about business strategies was many a times, overpowered by our obligations towards the social governance targets but it definitely sharpened the way we approached the issues and challenges. The academic inquisitive temperament developed in Macquarie stayed with me and recently I submitted my thesis to the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade for award of PhD in International Business. After retiring from Government as the Joint Director General of Civil Aviation, in September 2015, I am working as the consultant adviser to the National Highways Authority of India steering their mission to enter the international infrastructure development arena.

Bachelor of Science - 1986
Since graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1986 I've gone onto a career in sales and marketing including running my own consultancy for 15 years. I've published 4 books on marketing and communication, won 6 awards for Marketing Excellence and presented to over 10000 business owners. As well as presenting and consulting, I am an avid photography, a musician and have a passion for cooking. I still remember fondly my time as a student at Macquarie and retain my love for the outdoors, plants and the bush. The greatest experience I had was a field trip to Bourke where we mapped the plant and animal life on a farm. I still drop in and visit the campus when I'm in Sydney.

Bachelor of Arts - 1987
I was studying Mass Communications when it was a groundbreaking course, and our tutes were always very lively with most of us making media in diverse forms. My passion was radio & I enjoyed hosting a Morning Talkabout show on 2SER Radio with my friend Jannine Baron My interviews were arts focussed at a time when community arts was HOT & Sydney was full of innovative practice. Going to these arts events fuelled my own passion to be an artists and that's what I've been doing ever since as a professional storyteller.

PhD (Law) - 2011
I received my PhD in Intellectual Property Law at Macquarie in early 2011. It was such a wonderful learning experience being an international student from Bangladesh. After returning home, I have got the position of Associate Professor in Department of Law, University of Dhaka (the premier university in Bangladesh).

Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Law - 2005
After graduating from Macquarie with a BA/LLB, I went on to be admitted as a Solicitor and then commenced an LLM (Research) at the University of New England (Armidale). My paper concerned genetic technology and how the common law could better confront the ownership and control of DNA. Patents on human DNA are currently a particularly controversial current topic in health and science. I have also contributed to the public debate on these issues, most recently providing a submission to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee’s inquiry concerning the Patent Amendment (Human Genes and Biological Materials) Bill 2010. While the Bill was not enacted, the inquiry provided me with the opportunity to air many concerns raised in my thesis as matters for public policy. I graduated from the UNE in 2011.

Doctor of Business Administration - 2015
It was a sheer pleasure and honour to be among the top brains selected for most prestigious Doctorate degree from a Leading Macquarie University. I still vividly remember my frustration when I had to submit a single researched paragraph to my supervisor ten times and still he was not satisfied and asked me to dig deeper. Sometimes digging so deeply gets me suffocated or felt like, "this is not for me... lets move on!" But great support of HDR teams and supervisors kept me motivated and as in movie "Pursuit of Happiness" the dream of holding Macquarie's Doctoral degree kept me motivated and let me work harder and harder...

Bachelor of Arts/Diploma of Education - 2008
As a mature-aged student, I undertook at Macquarie (or 'club Mac' as we referred to it) and completed my undergraduate studies (BAdipEd) slowly over a 6 year period with the support given by my husband and two children. After working at various positions as a primary teacher, realised to obtain my goal as a permanent part time teacher in NSW, would need to go back to Macquarie and undertake a TESOL post graduate certificate to gain a better chance of this option. To my delight I am happy to say that this was accomplished in 2012 at a school not too far from our home. The uni's locality and the strong support options to pursue your goal, make this uni one to take notice in Sydney. I am proud to be able to say that I am working in a part time job I have always hoped for and it allows me to undertake volunteer work full time, helping all sorts of people from various backgrounds achieve their goals.

Master of Higher Education - 2012
Having lived abroad for almost a decade, I was going to give up on furthering my education. However, Macquarie allowed me to further my dreams and passions while living overseas. On returning to Australia, I have been able to integrate the skill set and educational mindset I gained from my studies into my current business and career. Currently, I am launching my own business in Adelaide and am excited to see how the research skills I acquired at Macquarie have truly been a benefit to the launch of my company. Bachelor of Finance - 2002
I studied at Macquarie University from 1999-2002 and count my years at Macquarie Uni among the best of my life. It was the launchpad for my career and where I was taught the core accounting and economics fundamentals that I use to run my business today – one of Australia's biggest and most successful comparison websites, finder.com.au. In fact, the strategies were so effective that they were simultaneously used to launch credit card and life insurance comparison sites. In actuarial studies I learned the time value of money and I still use the same textbook from uni to help build the website’s calculators. Other fond memories include my semester at Dunmore Lang College, late nights in the computer science labs, and the chicken burgers at the food court – I’d have eaten two per day to fuel my day of learning! I sold my first business, Freestyle Media, a digital media agency, in 2007 after starting the company while at Macquarie Uni. I then co-founded my second startup, finder.com.au, in 2006, from my lounge room. We now reach 1.2 million monthly visits, with 48 staff in Sydney and 71 globally, and we’ll be launching finder.com in the US this year. On a personal front, I’m a proud father of two and am passionate about helping people all over the world save money – a passion that was born while I was a frugal university student.

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - 1973, Master of Arts (Honours) - 1978
I always felt lucky to have had my undergraduate education in English and History at Macquarie. The range of techniques, knowledge, attitudes and above all the sense of inquiry and exploration at a time of huge social and intellectual change was exciting and laid a foundation for a subsequent career that included teaching, writing, research and consultancy. I will always remember standing at the window of the English common room with Professor Piper and looking at an anti-Vietnam moratorium group I was planning to join. He discussed Hamlet and Sophocles, asking whether the marchers were doing no more than expressing their rebellion against sad fathers and uncles. When I said to him that if that were the case I wopuld soon be howling at my father's moon, he said "I'd be shocked if you did not. What are you waiting for?" And then there was Dr Kirkby introducing us to Carlos Castaneda alongside Melville, Dikinson and Nabokov. I can still visualize some of those marches and parties and seminars. They were such good teachers, and my fellow students were and still are fascinating.

Master of Arts - 1980
I grew up from 1920 -1937 which included the depression years but we were relatively untouched by these events as my Father was a Fire Accident and Marine Insurance Inspector of the Australian General Insurance Co ,Sydney. We lived in Concord-Burwood area and we had one of the few cars in the suburb.

I went through MLC Burwood and expected to go on to Sydney University to study Science for a Research degree. My Father always loved farming and looking to his retirement years and providing for an older brother , he invested in a 200 acre dairy farm at Baulkham Hills in 1934 just before my public examination years. Due to drought, economic conditions and changing Government requirements for farms in the Sydney area, the venture turned rapidly into a financial disaster.  The younger brother, at an Agriculture High School was taken out of school at !5 years and with the older brother ran the farm to save money, (no milk machines then) and the staff were dismissed. This affected the family ability to send me on to Sydney University, although they ran up debts to keep me at school until 1937 to finish my education.

I accepted a Teachers ' Scholarship which paid for my training and gave me an allowance and guaranteed me a job in the Department of Education afterwards. So my Sydney University aspirations were thwarted and so you can imagine the excitement of doing tertiary studies, which had to wait until after marriage and five children, when Macquarie University announced its establishment in 1964! So it was that my eldest son,Christopher, started in 1967 and I was accepted in 1968 with my Leaving Certificate of 1937( top school pass). I did four years (part time) of undergraduate courses in a wide range of subjects gaining a BA degree and later a post graduate course which covered wide ranging subjects to obtain an MA degree in History, Philosophy and Political Studies. My major study was in Australian History (convicts study). I was delighted with this study under Dr. Portia Robinson who encouraged further publications into early documents and records.My special field was the Orphan School which although not published I have the earliest study in that area. This building is now part of the campus of Western Sydney University. I have the highest regard for Portia who was most innovative in encouraging several of us to go further with our studies and produce a series of early colonial works. 

I have been able to produce some local research projects in church history. My family and forebears planted the seed of education from an early age in me which finally bore fruit at Macquarie University. As a family we are graduates of Macquarie and several of my grand children as well.

Having left a bequest to Macquarie University in my will, I have become a Patron of the University’s Joan & John Lincoln Society. Thank you Macquarie University for the opportunity you provided for me to complete tertiary studies and for many other mature–aged students, especially women.

Bachelor of Creative Arts - 2005
Current greatest achievement is being one of the 2013 - 2015 Artist in Residence at Australia House and invited to make a work for the 2015 Echigo Tsumari Art Field Triennial. I had my first solo exhibition in the student gallery at Macquarie University and received a scholarship for a six month exchange in Italy to learn marble carving and undertake an internship at the Tate Britain - very formative career experiences!

Master of Science (Honours) - 1970, PhD (Chemistry) - 1972
Having graduated from Sydney University with an Honours Science Degree in Chemistry (1951) and Diploma in Education (1952) and having taught science at Lithgow High School for eight years (1952 – 1959), I was appointed in 1960 to Sydney Teachers College in the Chemistry Department as a lecturer. After several years of settling in to the new responsibilities, I was ready to extend my academic qualifications. On the brink of commencing a Master of Science degree at Sydney University, the newly established Macquarie University in 1966 appointed Dr Blue Barclay from Sydney University Chemistry Department as Foundation Head of Chemistry. Having worked with Professor Barclay in the writing of the Nuclear Research Foundation secondary Chemistry material, my course was clear. I applied and was accepted into the first part-time cohort of the MSc(Hons) in 1967. Macquarie was certainly in its infancy but it was a rewarding experience and led to Professor Barclay recommending that I should apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship at the end of 1969 to undertake a PhD under the supervision of Dr R H Smith, a very conscientious member of the Chemistry Department. I was successful, commencing at the beginning of 1970. The Department of Education granted me leave of absence. I graduated at a private ceremony on 27 July 1972. The research was stimulating and the required teaching exciting. The approach introduced by Professor Barclay to teaching 1st Year University Chemistry broke new ground. A mass lecture was used only to introduce a new topic. For the rest of the time groups of 10 students were tutored by an assigned PhD student in one of a number of small laboratories where it was possible to integrate theory and laboratory work. On returning to the then renamed Sydney Institute of Education, as Head of Chemistry I was pleased to implement, as far as possible, the integrated theory and practice experienced at Macquarie University.

Bachelor of Arts - 1973
As an original part time BA student from when Macquarie uni first began in, I think, 1966 until I finished in 1972, I remember Macquarie from its earliest stage when it was just a big paddock with either one or two buildings, with a lot of blackberry bushes heavily infested with rabbits. If I came early for night tutorials I used to drive around the bushes & spotlight rabbits with the headlights of my car. The uni library had very few books so as I worked in the outer suburbs, mainly Parramatta to Penrith/Windsor, I used to have to drive after work to the NSW library in Macquarie St about twice a week. One tutor (can't remember his name) was kind enough to allow us part-timers to have our weekly tutorial at the El Ranccho pub nearby - the attendance rate, I remember, was extremely high. I haven't been back since but hope to do so, one day.

Bachelor of Economics - 2010
2007 was the year when I started my Bachelor in Economics. It was a new country and new challenge for me. Macquarie University was the best thing that could have happen in my life and I proud to be a graduate from this educational institution. The greatest challenge for me would be to work and study simultaneously, however I got hold of a balance between the two. The old library used to be packed and I still remember the times when I use to sit on the carpet and study for hours before my final term. It was a good experience and I miss my Macquarie University life.

Bachelor of Arts - 1977
The library for study and chat with shushing Librarians. Lot milder now I am on the other side! Green grass and fledgling trees on the courtyard where we sat for lunch. Mugs camping trips. First on campus 68 with mother each school holiday. Student 74-76, Librarian 1991 to present

Bachelor of Arts - 1994
While working in the film editing studios overnight, my film group was told by the security guards that the mummy in the uni's Egyptian museum a couple of floors below us came to life at night – it made for an interesting evening!

Bachelor of Arts - 1979
I was an evening student, working full time in a demanding job in the city. I have very fond memories of one particular subject I studied under Associate Professor Liddell - "The Literary Uses of Language". It was an inspiring and fascinating course. Professor Liddell was also our tutor and the tutorials for our small group often went well over half an hour overtime as discussion was spirited. She was generous with her help and time and I will always be grateful for that experience. It is 35 years since I graduated and I am long since retired but I well remember the stimulation that that study provided. Judith Slaughter

I have fond memories of my time spent downstairs, under the "Burger Bar", where we would gather to play pinball. The area was managed by Stan, a true gentleman. On graduation, I ensured I had a photo taken down there with a very important person - Jim - who kept the pinball machines working.

Postgraduate Diploma Ancient History - 2011
Macquarie changed my life, it showed me the real world, how to live in it and how to apply what I learned there in my life. I grew as a professional as well as a human being. Thanks!

Bachelor of Arts - 1994
My fondest memories of Macquarie University is: I love doing my reading/studying in the old library. I sat by the window and looked over to the green pasture(it's really my "greener pasture") I could spend hours there without feeling tired or bored.

Bachelor of Arts (English Literature) - 1973, Postgraduate Certificate (Editing and Publishing) - 2008
There was very little or no student accommodation in the 1960s and early 1970s. When students asked to use vacant houses on the University site, University Admin was at first unsympathetic to the plight of poor students. Then an enterprising young fellow (initials DJD, I believe) took out a mining licence on the newly laid lawn in front of the union building and proposed digging for minerals. It was on...hundreds of students, would-be miners, camped in a tent city on the lawn until Admin relented. A few fibro houses were leased on a share basis to needy students at a cost of $6 per room. I know because I was one of them and it made all the difference to me in completing my degree. Thank you DJD!

Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) - 1982
I remember the open spaces. Everything felt new. Classes were small and were a mixture of school leaves and mature age students. I left uni knowing that an education was not something for the young. There was also a great degree of flexibility in the subjects that allowed me to explore different topics and gave me a great sense of freedom.

Bachelor of Arts/Diploma of Education - 1990
The best memory was the first day, walking in at the top of the stairs looking over the Macquarie Theatre and seeing this whole new world waiting. Seeing and smelling the books in the library which even now brings back the same memories of sitting on the stacks surrounded by archaeology books in German and French. Then there was the 3 hour lunches meeting people from all over Sydney and the great Chinese food upstairs.

Graduate Diploma of Education - 1997
A defining moment for me when I was at Macquarie completing my Dip. Ed. was the night my house burned down. It was a winter's night and in my family home we had a cosy fire burning in the fireplace. Later that night, as we lay sleeping, the masonite backing of the fireplace caught alight and soon the whole roof was roaring with orange flames and the house was filled with smoke. We all had to run out into the street as windows shattered - it was terrifying. Some days later when we inpected the damage it was discovered that the computer hard drive had completely melted. When I had collected my wits sufficiently, I called my friend who was also doing the Dip. Ed. and asked her to apologise to Ken Watson, our Education tutor, and explain to him that I couldn't hand in my major assignment that day as the house had burned down ... He laughed and said that was the best/worst excuse he'd ever heard! Later he realised it was true and was sorry. :) Ken was actually one of the most lovely, dedicated and experienced teachers I have ever had. I still remember our conversations about the value or not of explicitly teaching grammar! I spent a lot of time on that assignment.

Hi there, My name is Anna, I graduated in July 2013, and I wanted to share my success in landing my dream job straight out of university. I was only looking for work for about 6 weeks, and by the time I was graduating, I was starting a new job the next week. I now run an on-line business called labfriend.com.au and I handle all of the commerce aspects, such as ordering, customer support, marketing online, emailing and a whole bunch of other activities. I believe the fact that my degree was from Macquarie University made me stand out from the rest, and why I got chosen when I didnt have any experience in this field.

My fondest memories of Macquarie come from the period throughout the 1990s when I had the privilege to be part of the MGSM faculty and to contribute to the growth and development of the School and its academic programs, while completing my doctoral work in managerial psychology - great times!

I graduated on 4th. April, 2002, with a BSc. majoring in Evolutionary Biology and Palaeontology), from the Division of Environmental and Life Sciences, School of Biological Sciences. In the First Semester of 2003, I passed two history units in a Non-Award Program, but did not complete this. On 28th. July 2003, I joined the Australian Museum in College Street, Sydney, as a "Behind-the-Scenes" Volunteer in the Malacology (Mollusc) Department, until about 15th. May, 2006. On 24th. February, 2004, I also joined Entomology (Insects), where I am still volunteering, and this, 2013, is my tenth year in a volunteer role at this museum. On 19th. September, 2007, I became a Diplomat of Macquarie University after gaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Museum Studies from the Division of Environmental and Life Sciences, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. Now, I am a Graduate again, having received my Master of Museum Studies Degree on 19th. April, 2013, from the Faculty of Science, Department of Environment and Geography.

I passed out in 2011 with a Masters in Finance, having scored at HD in international business. The time spent at Macquarie was a filled with an experience that can't be defined in few words, be it learning, networking, understanding different cultures or coexisting withthem. The most deared memories would be of the social events I conducted with the help of iclub, the day trips and entire experience of rediscovering my own skills. In a matter of one year I achieved the GLP, got a fantastic internship opportunity which later continued to be my full time work in Sydney, and above all the friends I made for life. I think the campus and infrastructure was par excellence, and I enjoyed every moment I spent there. Now that I am back in India and have ventured into my own manufacturing business, I recollect all that I have learned and gained and am sure all that would help me get a much broader perspective in terms of work and life.

The Macquarie qualification helped gain me employment as an English teacher in China, where I lived for five years. My daily personal contact with Chinese people of all ages, combined with a background as an ecologist and former CSIRO science writer, led to an original cultural analysis. Those new conclusions are widely applicable, especially to the international university and business communities. The result is a book, Mythbusting the Cult of Confucius, available from many online and other retailers. It brings an important new understanding of Chinese people, including the basis of their cultural values, and how those affect us. Most of all, the book is about what we can learn from the Chinese. Supplementing the book, I provide a blog of anecdotes of life in China, “Postcards from Shanghai,” plus another of post-book thoughts, “The Cult of Confucius”. I invite everyone to enjoy both, and to join the discussion they and the book stimulate.

After finishing my studies and returning to my country I understood that having had the chance of living abroad was the key to see things different and handle myself in a different way. Horses are and have been my passion since early age, hard to explain why I admire and value them so much, hard to articulate into words and probably hard to a reader or listener to understand as well. Back in the day, those first philosophers understood and recommended horses as therapeutic tools, they say that nothing better for the soul than a ride on a horse. I integrated my passion and the duty I thought could work, and it worked. I founded paso.trote.galope Fundacion, a nonprofit organization which strives to make Colombia a better place to live, how? Starting with the young generations, making them happier, better human beings. Paso.trote.galope promotes equine therapy and horse coaching activities to children living under poverty and exposed to crime, drugs and hard conditions. By doing these activities we develop team work, respect for each other, empathy, confidence, and many other psychological impacts. We also focus on teaching about the importance of animal care and respect (Colombia high rates of animal abuse). At the end, children understand the importance of all these values as the basis to have a better place to live. This is my dream, a dream that became a reality and now a story. View video.

Bachelor of Legal Studies, 1992 - Master of Arts in History, 2010
Since graduating with an MA in History from Macquarie in 2010 I have gone on to complete a Master of History with a 25% research project at the University of New England, Armidale in which I examined the legal construction and consequences of race defilement under the 1933 Nuremberg Laws in Nazi Germany. I then completed a Master of Letters in Jewish, Hebrew and Biblical Studies (in reality in Holocaust Studies) at the University of Sydney, also with a 25% research project. This time I examined the history of Nazi immigration to Australia post world war II and the failed attempt to prosecute alleged nazi murderers by the Australian government. I have one unit to complete this semester in a Master of Human Rights Law and Policy at the UNSW in which I will be studying as a cross-institutional student "Law and the Holocaust" with Dr Rundle, a guest lecturer in the Faculty of Law of the University of Sydney. My intention is to read for a Doctorate in which I research the politics of the War Crimes Amendment Act (Cth) of 1989. This is a vast project which will entail reading archival material from various Commonwealth Departments, familiarity with global Nazi war crime trials and an oral history project whereby I interview the various living stakeholders in the creation of the Amended war crimes Act and the prosecution of the alleged Nazi murderers.

After leaving Macquarie University, I was planning to go back to my home country, Germany, and find a job there, but then Google Ireland called and I've started a great career with Google Books and News in Dublin. After almost 3 years in Ireland I finally moved back to Germany - with Google - and have landed a dream job as Strategic Partner Manager for Google Play Magazines. I'm working with the biggest industry players such as Condé Nast, Hearst or Future Publishing and I'm traveling a lot - Paris, London, Munich and regularly to the US. I studied communications and never thought I'd end up with an internet giant, but Google really is an amazing employer and I can only recommend working there. Happy to help if anyone wants to apply.

I did my Master of Sustainable Development from Macquarie University back in 2010 and then joined Save the Children's humanitarian operation for the flood affected communities in Pakistan. During my almost two years stay in Save the Children, I have successfully developed Save the Children’s Country Strategic Plan for Pakistan (2012-2015) and designed project proposals of worth USD 80 Million. Due to my outstanding performance and strategic contribution to the organization's Asia program, I have recently been acknowledged by the President of Save the Children Federation Inc.

I can't thank my time at Macquarie enough for the amazing careers, and life, I've had because of my education and amazing lecturers. My degree focused on economic development and modern Europe. An interdisciplinary degree it gave me knowledge into history, politic, economics and even a few law courses! What flexibility - something I couldnt have got from any other University at the time. Following Macquarie I became the youngest Trade Commissioner in the New Zealand Government's history (at the time), promoting trade between our two countries. I subsequently moved to Scotland undertaking roles from heading their Industry Development & Planning Unit through to managing the corporate restructure of their Tourism Development Agency, VisitScotland, with over 1100 people. In 2011 I moved to London with the Australian Trade Commission to promote Australia's significant and outstanding business & industry involvement in the London 2012 Olympics and am now the Marketing Manager for Europe for the same organisation. All thanks to Professor Sasha Pavkovic, a Macquarie University education and a desire for adventure!

I worked in NSW and federal politics and contributed to the reform of Austsudy, the negotiation of NSW first native Vegetation legislation and an increase in the NSW Health Budget. I then moved to the USA where I opened the Washington DC office of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a body that coordinates the Internet's domain name system. I successfully negotiated with Congress and Executive Branch for a new accountability mechanism which now sees all the Internets stakeholders participating in keeping the Internet coordinated not controlled by any one government or organisation. I now run the Australia New Zealand office of a $5billion private equity company that invests in invention and am a board member of the ANZAC research institute and auDA, the policy manager of Australia's .au presence on the Internet. I also have two children.

Completing 7 years of full time study was a great achievement. 2. Career Wise I have travelled the world as General Manager of Celebrity Gardener Jamie Durie's Design Practice PATIO for 6 years. We won over 25 international design awards including GOLD Medal at the world famous Chelsea Garden Show in London in 2008. A very proud moment. 3. Today - I own and manage with a business partner our own Landscape Architecture Design Practice with 2 offices in Sydney and an office in Indonesia. We are designed over 400 projects a year. 4. I found the love of my life my wife and we have 2 fabulous daughters.

My name is Daniel Kilov and I am a memory athlete. I am capable of memorizing a shuffled deck of cards in under five minutes, and over 100 random digits in five minutes. At the 2011 Australian Memory Championships I managed to secure second place behind my coach and mentor, Tansel Ali. I also broke the Australian record for the abstract images event. In 2012 I repeated the feat, breaking my own record by memorizing 115 abstract images and again securing second place. In addition, I am a member of Mensa and a frequent contributor to the Australian Mensa magazine, TableAus. Since graduating from Macquarie with First Class Honors in Philosophy, I have been described as one of "the nation's, finest thinkers and communicators" by the ABC and I was a speaker at the Australian Mensa Conference and was the opening speaker at the TEDxMacquarie and TEDxCanberra conferences in 2012.

I am responsible for the strategy and P&L Crikey, Smart Company, Property Observer, Women's Agenda, Start Up Smart and Leading Company. I am married with two teenage sons. My eldest is a second-year Commerce student at Macquarie University.

Led and conducted international investigations into refugee smuggling, corruption and fraud etc. on behalf of the United Nations. 2006-Present International consultant...currently en poste in Nigeria as Government Advisor on behalf of Commonwealth Secretariat. It is in some ways thanks to my Bachelor of Legal Studies that I was able to launch myself into an international organizations career.

Since graduating from Macquarie I've moved back to Massachusetts (USA) and got the job I was hoping for. I've been the Town Planner for Suffield, Connecticut since 2007. I got the job about six months after leaving Australia. Through this job and experience I've obtained my professional planners certification. Getting my certification (AICP) has been one of my greatest professional achievements to date.

This may not be a big achievement in life but it's my biggest achievement to date - and all from taking the time to do one extra year of study at Macquarie. After finishing a double degree in business and law, I was still extremely unsure with what I wanted to do with my life. When I was offered a position to complete the honours course in Marketing and Management I jumped at the chance to find my niche interest. The flexibility and creative freedom offered with an honours year allowed me to find my passion with market research and gain practical experience from running my own project. Within months of graduating, I have now secured a full-time job in market research with a global boutique market research agency - Hall and Partners/Openmind - which involves both commercial and social government research, which is right up my ally. That final year at Macquarie University truly showed me what I wanted to do with my life and gave me a head start on other graduates for recruitment into a firm where I believe there is enormous potential. After graduating from Macquarie University in 1990, I gained experience in software engineering at Mitsubishi research labs in Japan before joining a small Hydrographic sciences firm on my return. In 1995, I started an Internet Service Provider (ISP), which after merging with a competitor was sold to Singapore-based, NASDAQ-listed company Pacific Internet (now Pacnet) in 1999. In 2000, I started Bulletproof Networks, providing Managed Services for corporate Australia. I have led Bulletproof through several years of rapid growth, and it is now the fastest growing Tier 1 Managed Hosting and Cloud Services provider in the Australian market. I run the technology strategy, corporate vision and direction of Bulletproof, and oversee the continuous infrastructure design and deployment cycle required of leading providers in this sector in my role as CIO.

Being a doctor is something I have wanted to do all my life, and I'm very excited to be pursuing my dream.

The knowledge obtained at Macquarie was really beneficial in assisting me to contribute to my organization upon graduating and returning home. In fact, my MIR background helps me deal with my current assignment at the Indonesian Defense University. After completing my degree I was lucky enough to land a position at Reuters (now Thomson Reuters) in Sydney. Developing through this company I worked in the London office for over 2 years and am currently based in New York. Now, almost 9 year after I graduated I have traveled extensively, am happily married and had my dream of living and working in New York come true. The lesson I have learnt throughout this is never to sell myself short and keep reaching for lofty goals.

After completing my MBA at MGSM in 2008, I came back to MQ to pursue a PhD (in sustainability reporting) from 2009-2011. During this period, I published 20 papers in peer-reviewed journals, presented at conferences in Auckland, Bangkok and Paris and written two chapters in 2 separate books on sustainability. After completing my PhD in 2.5 years, I landed a role with one of the leading sustainability consulting firms in Australia, Net Balance. I primarily work in the Assurance Business Line but also do quite a bit of work around incorporating and demonstrating the value of sustainability within a business, whether its regarding their strategy, governance or reporting aspects.

At the age of 16, I left my homeland of Australia for the United States, where I finished high school and attended university. From the time I left Sydney, I wanted to return, but finances and circumstances convened to make it seem impossible. I decided to go through Macquarie's postgraduate certificate in editing in the hopes that i would help me land a job back in Australia when the time came. The time came in late 2012, when I was offered the role of Editor-in-Chief at Bean Media. My experience at Macquarie has not only helped me relearn how to edit Australian English, it created contacts that enabled me to hire a fellow Macquarie alum as a freelance subeditor.

I graduated from Macquarie university in June 2010. Since then, i worked in Technology in JP Morgan Australia as a Business Analyst in their Graduate programme starting in January 2011. After being employed for a period of 6 months, I identified an opportunity in the local Australian market within the Appliances sector. Resigning from my prestigious job with one of the largest investment banks in the world, I started my first business in September 2011. We are an Australian owned brand of Kitchen Appliances, GRUNN. The business is fantastic and we are growing everyday! In the next year, I diversified my Business into the Health and Beauty sector. Opening my second business, Crazy Cosmetics, that distributes corporate branded cosmetics to the local Australian market. Life has been an adventurous journey. All this would not have been possible without the education that I received from Macquarie University.

I am Principal Consultant for K J Ross & Associates, a specialist Software Testing firm - currently on a Programme Test Management role at a large Federal Government Agency working towards process improvements. Over the years I've worked in London, Sydney, Auckland and Melbourne, on Y2K, Euro, Defence and many other projects - 6 years ago I settled in Canberra with my wife of 13 years and three kids. I am very pleased to share with you my greatest career achievement to date. In 2013 I became part owner and Managing Director of AddCash Finance, a specialist cash flow lender to small businesses across Australia. My education at Macquarie was essential to securing the right jobs early on in my career and building the foundation that put me on the path to where I am now.
When I graduated more than 10 years ago I had no idea where that path would lead but today I am very excited about the opportunities that continue to lie ahead. Before joining AddCash, I spent several years with Chartered Accounting firms and then moved to major Financiers. I have worked closely with all types of businesses across Australia and New Zealand from Sole Traders to Senior Management of ASX Listed and Foreign Owned Subsidiaries. Having finished a BSc in Physical Geography in 1988, the question I was most asked was "Are you going to be a teacher or ranger?". In my mind the answer was neither - but I had no clear idea of an alternative. The path since followed has been a combination of public and private sector work experience, coupled with additional study in Law, a belated stint at Grade rugby and, most rewardingly, a loving family. The greatest achievement overall has been the recognition that I can find an answer. Sounds simple, but I am still amazed at the reluctance people have, professionally and privately, to make a decision, air it and then stand behind it. Taking the breadth of things you know and being able to apply them in order to solve something and to see that it gives confidence to others. That's infinitely rewarding. It's still okay to get it wrong (or not entirely right) - but I've found having some direction is always better than having none. Burke and Wills may have a valid counterpoint. From a starting point in 1988 of having no answer, the foundation of knowledge acquired during my study at Macquarie has helped me confidently pursue a career in environmental management from NSW public sector organisations through to multi-national consultancies and to now have started my own consultancy, Aspect Environmental (#1 on Google search!). It has helped me motivate colleagues and employees and now bore my wife and children (my answers are sometimes called "lecturing" for some reason). Either way they have been the source and strength of all of my personal and professional achievements. I received my PhD in Law at Macquarie in 2007. I had such a wonderful learning experience being an international student from Uganda. I now work for the United Nations Development Programme as Regional Policy Advisor for Eastern and Southern Africa.

I graduated from Macquarie with a BA- Psychology major in 1999. Holding a generalist degree has helped me in a number of ways since I have graduated,particularly giving me the impetus to take my degree overseas where I worked for a number of years throughout Asia. I now coordinate a program at the University of South Australia which motivates students to undertake an international experience as part of their degree programs.

Macquarie gave me the foundation to develop skills within International Relations where I was able to conduct and Foreign Development Consulting Mission within Asia as well as get a exciting opportunity to be an International Relations Manager. I am confident to say I am well equipped as well as fortunate to be an Macquarie Alumna!

I finished my arts degree in 2011 and started my masters (in commerce - business and marketing), while working full time for Macquarie University in Campus experience. I have recently left Macquarie and now find myself working as a marketing coordinator for the Australian Gift and Homewares Association (AGHA). Through my Masters I was able to apply for time off to an study a subject in Denmark as part of Macquarie's Exchange program. My greatest experience has been exploring Europe while studying at Copenhagen business school, which I never thought I would do! In gaining international knowledge and contacts, it gave me indispensable life and professional experience that I was able to use in my job for Macquarie as well as AGHA.

The campus had a lively atmosphere. There were always many diverse events, seminars and workshops held. Having taken part in them, I learned about various topics, met new people and made a lot of friends.

Bachelor of International Business, 2009 - Master of Politics and Public Policy, 2010
Having completed two tertiary degrees at MQ, I now find myself in the heart of Asia working for an NGO in Mongolia. The winters are severe and the countryside is breathtaking. My experience has been both inspiring and challenging. I work to promote relations between Australia and Mongolia through the Mongolia Australia Society (affectionately known as Mozzies). This country has captured my imagination and really is the new frontier in development work.

After completing a BA LLB in 1982 I worked as a Probation & Parole Officer before being admitted as a barrister in 1986. I worked from Chalfont Chambers in Sydney for 18 months then changed roles to become a solicitor for Dept Community Services for over 7 years. I was their Senior then Principal Solicitor. Retired and bought a B&B in Katoomba then moved to Bathurst where I lectured at Charles Sturt Uni in Criminal Law and Evidence & Procedure for a few years. Now retired.

Although 3 years have passed since my bachelor, I still remember vividly MQ scenery and my friends there (I'm international student). I was the type that asked a lot of questions, mostly from my textbook reading, not from the lecture. Ironically, my bachelor was of Applied Finance and my job now is Copy Writer for an advertising agency. I think all the Art & Language units that I took as elective had paid off.

Despite not being on campus and living overseas, I always felt that "MQ" was not far away and that all staff be they academic or administrative were extremely helpful. After almost 9 years (MA and then a Phd), I feel a bit nostalgic, but as an alumni I am still reflected in the lighthouse's beacon!

I completed a degree started at UNSW while teaching, and graduated from Macquarie in 1972. as a part time student. I taught English and History at High Schools, left (as you did back then) to raise 2 sons, then re-trained in Special Education in 1989, and was then Head Teacher Support at 2 High schools. In 2000 I left teaching and was a trainer and manager at the ATO for 9 years. Now retired and living on the beautiful south coast at Barrack Heights. Best memory: only 2 (yes, 2!) students in a tutorial with the professor in English in those days. Meant you couldn't hide, had a fort-nightly assignment, and really discussed your work each week.

The most memorable time in Macquarie Uni was when I was able to sit by the lake to take a break, think, sleep or just meditate. There was the time when my grades were so bad that Professor Bill Norton had to reluctantly tell me to leave the course unless I could commit more time in order to cope. Back then, I was working in the treasury department in a bank, paying 2 mortgages and had just became a father! I now realised those trying times were meant to prepare me with utmost perseverance and unrelenting motivation that had formed the foundation in my successful banking career as the Executive Director in one of Malaysia's largest financial institutions and now as a private equity investor in the power and renewable energy sector.

Australian specialist broadcast training company Ahern Media & Training Pty Ltd (AMT) has played a crucial role in the launch of Afghanistan's first professional media training institution, Nai Media Institute (NMI). As the troops pull out of Afghanistan, media will play an important role in the reconstruction of the country. To win people's hearts and minds, you have to win their radios, televisions and mobile phones, said AMT's CEO Steve Ahern, who has just returned from Afghanistan.
